El Salvador
The 7 reasons to go to El Salvador!
They call him "The Little Thumb of America" because of the miniscule size of its territory. It is the only country in Central America that does not have a coastline in the Caribbean and is home to historical and natural wonders that many countries would envy. This is El Salvador, a destination that surprised us on our way and that we will not stop recommending.
For its natural wonders
El Salvador has dream places that are sure to leave visitors wanting more. It is enough to travel a few kilometers from the capital to have access to beauties such as Lake Coatepeque, classified as one of the most beautiful watery volcanic craters in the world; or the San Salvador volcano and the famous Boquerón, from where you can see the crater that the eruption left hundreds of years ago.
Warmth of its people
In the absence of world-renowned tourist icons, we believe that the main reason to travel to El Salvador is its inhabitants. Salvadorans are excessively friendly, they always present themselves with a smile that seems to want to escape from their faces and they receive the visitor with a loud "come forward" that makes them feel welcome in every corner.
Everything is very close
Since the territory of El Salvador is so small, it can be covered by land in its entirety in a few hours of travel. Everything is close to the capital and the towns and beaches are a few kilometers away. Both cities and tourist places are easily accessible and the country's road infrastructure is one of the best in Central America.
Approach to the Mayan world
Although it does not present the spectacular nature of Mexico and Guatemala, the trail left by the Mayan culture in El Salvador is very interesting and worth visiting. Beauties such as Tazumal, the Ruins of San Andrés and La Joya de Cerén set visitors' imaginations soaring and can be an excellent appetizer of what awaits them in the northern countries.
Because it's not how the media paint it
Figures from NGOs worldwide indicate that El Salvador is one of the - if not the most - violent countries in the world. However, this is due to wars between maras (gangs) that kill each other without truce in the slums of the cities and fill the morgues with corpses of both sides. But these terrible wars that bleed El Salvador are fought far from the urban headwaters and the interesting places that the country has to visit.
The pupusas
For starters, we believe that pupusas should be as universal a dish as pizza. This Salvadoran delicacy is one of the most extraordinary delicacies we have eaten on any of our trips. These are dough, rice or corn tortillas according to your preference, stuffed with beans, cheese and a little flower that grows in Central America called loroco (as we are vegetarians, we don't bother trying the others). They are prepared on the grill and served with pickled vegetables and natural tomato sauce. They are eaten with the fingers and are highly addictive.
Its colorful villages
Traveling through the small towns of El Salvador is to enter micro worlds full of color, typical buildings and friendly people at every turn. In addition, since everything is so close, you can exit from one and enter the next after a few minutes of road trip.
